God is Spirit. The human soul, created in God's image and likeness bears an astonishing likeness to God's Spirit. Prayer is the mystical union between our soul and God's Spirit - through prayer, our soul is fused to God's Spirit. The call to such a great union requires of us that we purify ourselves in real earnest from every affection to sin. Without an ongoing growth in holiness, we will neither grow in prayer nor experience this divine union with God.
